Announcing College Rank 'Em
Continuing to enhance the college football experience, welcome to a whole new era of college pick em
The College Football Pick ‘Em competition has been a staple for college football fans, and for good reason - it’s fun, and nearly unpredictable. However, I wanted to take it up a notch and add a new element to this challenge.
Today, I am proud to introduce the next iteration of college football competitions - The College Football Rank ‘Em Challenge
One of the most fun competitions sports fans participate in each year is March Madness. The fun part about March Madness is the number of possible combinations of brackets. I believe the College Football Rank ‘Em challenge will have a similar feel to it. You pick your winners, you pick your rankings, and see how close you can get to the actual release of the true rankings before the games kick off on Saturday.
How Does It Work?
Everyone starts with a blank slate. There are 25 open slots needing to be filled in by you.
Now, it would be extremely annoying if you had to go through one by one and find the team you wanted to fill in. However, this has been made easy for you by including the What If simulation tool into this page as well.
Unlike the main What If simulation tool, this one just looks at the current week only. When you open up the page, it will already have the current predicted top 25 results ready for you. If you want to start there as the foundation, just click on the Use Predicted Outcome button and it will auto-populate all of the 25 blank cells.
If you would rather make some changes to the outcomes of the games you believe are different than what is expected, great! Make your changes to the scores at the bottom of the page, then click on the Run Simulation button. The button will become enabled once there is a change in any of the scores.
Once your simulation is finished running, you will see a large message saying your simulation was complete.
Once again, click on the Use Predicted Outcome button to fill in all of the blank cells with the teams the model is predicting.
Make Your Own Changes
Maybe you think the Rankings Right Now algorithm has it close, but you believe there are some slight changes that need to be made. No problem! You have the ability to make changes to your predicted rankings in two different ways:
If you believe you want to move a team up or down in the rankings and fill the remaining teams into the empty slot that just became available, use the Insert Team button on the ranking slot you believe the team belongs. For example, in the video above I move Tennessee up to the #4 ranking by going to the #4 ranking slot, selecting Tennessee from the team dropdown menu, and then clicking the Insert Team button. This moves Alabama and Ole Miss down in the rankings to fill in for Tennessee’s old #7 ranking slot that became available
Maybe for teams who are ranked in the 20’s, you don’t think there needs to be a a shifting of rankings, but instead just a full replacement of a team for another. For example, in the video above I go to the #23 ranking slot, click Syracuse from the drop down menu, and then click on the Replace Team button. This leaves all of the teams in their place, while swapping out Syracuse and replacing it for Indiana.
When you are happy with your predicted rankings, click on the Submit My Rankings button and you’re good to go!
After a simulation has been saved, you will see a message at the top of the page.
Prediction Evaluation
This can go a million different ways, but for now, let’s keep it simple.
If you get the prediction correct, it is 10 points
If you miss the prediction by one spot (regardless of up or down), its 3 points
If you miss the prediction by two spots (regardless of up or down), its 1 point
Take the sum of all the points and that’s your final score. Each week I will post the best scores of the competition here in the newsletter!
When Can I Make My Submissions?
The College Rank ‘Em Challenge will be available from 12:00AM EST Wednesday to noon kickoff on Saturday. So, if there are a few Friday night games that should have an impact on the rankings, you can use that information to submit them with the context in mind.
Taking The Next Step
The goal of Rankings Right Now has always been to enhance the college football experience for fans, and I believe this will be a fun new way for fans to try and follow along with how rankings change in real time. This would not have been achievable in the past due to the fact people can’t follow every single game and predict how different points combinations lead to different ranking scenarios. However, with Rankings Right Now, these games now become available for people to play with and see how close they can get.
