Week 7 AP Poll vs Rankings Right Now
Week 7 was arguably one of the craziest weekends in the history of college football, a perfect test for the Rankings Right Now algorithm. How well did it do?
By the end of Saturday (more like Sunday morning), I had absolutely no idea how well the Rankings Right Now algorithm would do. Usually I can gauge a few different spots where it should be solid, but after seeing three top 10 teams fall to unranked opponents, Miami nearly escape death in Berkley, and a handful of other ranked teams tumble, I felt just as clueless as everyone else.
Head To Head Results
Here is how the algorithm did in comparison to the actual results of the AP rankings for Week 7.
Initial Reactions
For how much madness happened, I thought the predictions did a great job handling the biggest question marks of the weekend
Where would Alabama go?
Dead on
Where would Tennessee go?
Dead on
Where would Miami go?
Dead on
Where would Mizzou go?
Missed by 1
The Texas A&M prediction was way too aggressive, that was obvious to everyone
Extremely strange how there were three teams tied for the #18 ranked team
To match the AP, I changed #18, #19, and #20 to align with these teams, which worked out well since all three matched up with each other
The algorithm is still too aggressive with unranked teams winning against top ten teams. Neither Arkansas nor Vanderbilt cracked the top 25, although they did get some AP votes
The AP poll isn’t as patriotic as the Rankings Right Now algorithm. Army and Navy are getting votes, but they’ll still have to wait
Terrible News
There is no part of me that is happy to report that Kcarnahan is once again the winner of the College Rank Em Challenge. Undefeated. However, there are more and more submissions each week which is great.
As a reminder of how the College Rank Em Challenge works:
Go to https://www.rankingsrightnow.com/college_rank_em before kickoff on Saturday to predict how you believe the rankings will look
After the games are over and the rankings have been released
For perfect predictions, you get 10 points
For predictions that are off by one spot, you get 5 points
For predictions that are off by two spots, you get 1 point
Just to show how ridiculous this weekend was
Kcarnahan had 107 points in his Week 6 predictions
Kcarnahan had 38 points in his Week 7 predictions
We will try to bring back happiness to the world next weekend with a fresh new slate of games.
